Integral Connector Design Creates a Low-Cost IP67/NEMA 4X Compliant Enclosure Situation: A major manufacturer in the industrial automation industry needed to create a low-cost I/O module that would be both IP67 and NEMA 4X compliant. But the cost of a NEMA 4-rated enclosure was prohibitive. Solution: MEC's Innovation design team worked closely with the customer's design team to create an enclosure with integral connectors. Connectors compliant with Device Net I/O standards are injection molded as part of the one-piece case. The corresponding electronics connect electrically within the cavity of the enclosure and are sealed with a polyurethane encapsulant. Results: The one-piece enclosure/connector module meets both IP67 and NEMA 4X specifications without the cost of a commercially made NEMA 4 enclosure and separate Device Net connectors. The customer's product provides the required weather, immersion, dust, and corrosion protection at a cost that can be successfully marketed.
