Electronic contract manufacturing, or outsourcing, involves enlisting the help of a third-party manufacturer to design and produce such electronic components as PCB assemblies, panel assemblies, and sometimes the entire box build assembly. Choosing to employ electronic contract manufacturing is often a very important, and very smart, step for many OEMs. The benefits of EMS contract manufacturing can be enormous, ranging from savings in time and money to receiving a better quality product than had the OEM produced the component itself. EMS contract manufacturing allows OEMs to free up resources to focus on the company’s core business—after all, PCB assembly is the third party’s niche, not the OEM’s. A good contract manufacturer will understand how PCB design has an impact on the OEM’s business, and will create prototypes and manufacture products based on design specifications supplied by the client. In many cases, however, contract manufacturers are excellent resources for PCB design consulting as well. The biggest concern for OEMs is finding a company with the right mix of electronics experience, engineering proficiency, and production capabilities to meet the client’s need for expert PCB assembly, panel assembly, and box build assemblies. Furthermore, OEM clients should demand fully certified boxes and panels from their contract manufacturers.
